An interview with Cathasaigh
- Why do you dress the way that you do?
- Personal choice, first of all. I love dresses. I think they're beautiful.
Long dresses down to my ankles... I just think they're really feminine and
pretty. And modesty. I just don't feel comfortable walking around in a mini-skirt,
or short shorts.
Have you always had long hair?
- Not always as long as it is now. [laughs] Obviously I didn't start out
with hair this long. I started growing it out when I was five... I think.
Do you want to change your hair color? Why, and to what?
- Oh...uhh....sorta. I've always loved the idea of black hair. Raven black
hair down to my waist just does something for me. I think it's because of
the Indian in me. Makes me feel more 'attached' to my ancestry. I doubt
I'd really do it, though. And if I did it'd be natural dye, not chemical.
What is your heritage?
- American Indian (Cherokee and Chickasaw tribes I believe), Polish, Czech, Hungarian,
German, Irish, Welsh.... I think that's it.
Would you say that you are any religion in particular?
- Christian. Just Christian. No denomination.
What kind(s) of music do you like?
- Ooo all kinds. IRISH CELTIC! Scottish Celtic. Classical. Folk....um....some
new age, a bit of metal, bit of Goth rock, classic rock, opera, rock opera,
musicals.....all kinds.
What is your favorite band? Why?
- Ooo tough one. I don't have a 'favorite' band. I have a bunch of favorites.
Carnival of Souls, which is a local Celtic band. They are where I first
learned of my love for Celtic music. ApologetiX, because they parody secular
music and I can listen to their versions. Evanescence, because I love their
mix of Goth rock, metal, Amy's voice and soft piano and guitar. Jody Abbott,
who is a local artist. I've been very inspired by her works. And quite a
few others.
If you could meet anyone who is alive today, who would it be? Why?
- Alive today..... humm. MICKEY MOUSE! No, just kidding. Minnie Mouse! [laughs]
Seriously. I don't know. There are so many people out there to meet.... I
don't know that I could pick a 'just one'. Two years ago I probably would
have said George Lucas. Now I'm not sure.
Who is your favorite historical person? Why?
- Jesus. He's God.
How has your Mother influenced your life?
- How has anyone's mother influenced their life? By being a Mother. OTHER
than tha-aat....she's let me be me. She hasn't pushed me into a mold...she's
let me mold myself. Let me learn what I want....let me be who I am. Taught
me morals, and what the Bible says. What really matters. And how to cook.
[laughs]
How has your sister influenced your life?
- She's done a lot to help me through my hard times....like when I'd have
a argument with (or in two cases lost) friends, she was always there for me, helping
me get through it. We can talk to each other really easily....and we played
together a lot when I was little. She used to play stuff on the piano for
me, and then I'd sit down and repeat it. It was a lot of fun.
What would you want your epitaph to say?
- "Back home with my Father and brother [Jesus]. Singing at His throne now."
What are some of your goals for the next few years?
- Further my relationship with God. Continue to improve my guitar abilities.
Perform as often as I can. Play with my friends. Do some acting. And continue
to be a kid.
Do you have any hobbies?
- Jewelry making. And art. Drawing, painting, sculpting, everything. Writing,
I love to write. Music, poetry, short stories, long stories, all sorts of
stuff.
What is your favorite book? Why?
- The Bible is my favorite book. God's word to His people....and a guidebook
for your life.
What is your favorite color? Why?
- Green! I don't really have any clue why. It's just so pretty. Not like
lime green, but darker greens... hunter, jungle, grass. Those greens. I also
love blue and purple.
How long have you been into music?
- Since before I was born. After all, in my mother's womb I listened to
her heartbeat, which was music.
Why do you like to sing?
- It makes me feel good. It's kind of like flying is for some people....just
this amazing experience. Of being free. When I sing, I feel like I haven't
a care in the world. Everyone needs a way to let their worries and troubles
disappear...and singing is my way. The fact that God's given me this incredible
gift makes it all the better. And
I like the way I make other people feel when I sing. To help them forget
about their worries is amazing. Like I said....it's a feeling of being free.
Just simply amazing and wonderful.
Why do you like playing so many instruments?
- Variety!!! [laughs] Music is my life. It's like eating. I have to play
music. I don't have a choice. You wouldn't want to eat just spaghetti every
day of your life. You'd want different tastes. And I don't want to just
play one instrument for the rest of my life. I want different tastes... different
sounds.
If you had to choose between singing and playing, which do you think that
you would pick?
- That's one of those really difficult questions to answer....it's like
having to pick between eating and drinking. I think I'd have to say singing..... I
can take my voice with me wherever I go, and I can only have an instrument
at certain times and places.
In one word, how would you describe yourself?
- Unique.
My name is Grace Lydia W., and Cathasaigh is my best friend. We're very close, and she's a very good friend to have around. She's very passionate about her music, and that's definitely a plus about her. She's got a couple sides to her. The music side, and then the...music side. She's seems to entwine her music with everything else. She's all about it. Mostly. She's also a person. A very nice person, but she's not a goodie-goodie. Though she is very sensitive and compassionate. Definitely.
